Blood orange super smoothie for these crazy and brilliant times

It's FINALLY spring here in Melbourne!!! OMG yay- I am actually relieved.
My body has been craving tangelo's, oranges, berries, smoothies, fresh fresh fresh things!!
This was an AMAZING breakfast smoothie that filled me up, kept me feeling light and kept me going till lunch (well SUPER late lunch because I was filming!!).
If you have small kids- this is a GREAT smoothie that they will LOVE! It's packed with antioxidants, vitamin c, protein, potassium etc etc it's just super great and will leave you feeling amazing!

I've been SUPER DUPER busy with life and filming etc.... as we all are. It always feels like around this time of year, everything goes into super charge, with so much more to do and accomplish...
Make sure you don't burn yourself out during these crazy and brilliant times ahead (plus the planets are doing some freaky deaky shit, which is giving the lovely life on Earth a massive shake up!!! GO WITH IT! change is here, with more to come-- struggle is futile!!  anyway, that's a whole other blog right there!!!)

Best thing to do is meditate, love, move your body and feed yourself with clean wholesome foods!!!  I must admit, lately, I've been consuming 1-3 smoothies a day to help me cope with non stop doing-- THIS IS WHAT MY BODY HAS BEEN ASKING FOR!!! Don't worry, I have been eating other things too!!! My body just works a heap better when I'm out and about, chugging down a smoothie from my jar.
It's important to mix up the ingredients of your smoothies it your eating a lot of them.... it's all about nutrients and variety!
I then come home and enjoy a really nice cooked meal, think green veggies, dark wild rice, seaweed, coconut oil, tammari, avo etc etc or a simple pasta with HEAPS of herbs, tomato paste and coconut oil mmmmmmmm- these dishes are SUPER QUICK TOO!!

Anyway, I wanted to share this particular smoothie recipe with you because I felt so good after it and the taste made do a little dance while I was eating it!!

WHAT YOU NEED
1 cup mixed frozen berries
1/2 frozen banana
1 small orange
1 cup liquid (I used 1/2 coconut water,  homemade 1/2 almond milk)
1 blood orange
1 tblsp hemp seeds
1 tblsp chia seeds
handful of any greens (I used rocket/arugula)
fresh herbs to garnish (I used apple mint)

WHAT YOU DO
Wash fruit and veg, peel orange peel and chuck everything excluding blood orange and herbs into a blender- blitz, serve then garnish!!
*Feel free to add ANY other fruit or veg... it will all be good!

My saviors on set

So... I have been working on a few sets the past couple of months- both acting and art directing are physically and mentally draining (but super fun) and the days are super long- lunch break is usually 10hrs after breakfast- then same again for dinner, early mornings and super late nights... so, to stop our boddies breaking down (which mine did to start with, because I'd gotten lazy with my self care- thankfully my body and mind reminded me pretty quickly!!) we need to make sure we take super care of ourselves... meditate on set while you're wainting for set up or a take, drink lots lof water and bring healthy snacks- this is what saved me.

MY SNACKS
I made sure I had a big bottle of coconut water- amazing for rehydration and gives amazing energy. No matter how much water I drink on set, I seem to get bad headaches quite often, solution= coconut water.
I also made myself epic green smoothies to take with me on set, so if I was starving at 11am and lunch wasn't for another few hours, my smoothis filled me up, gave me an amazing energy boost and stopped my body and mind from being stressed.
I brought my own tea bags, organic green and other herbal teas. People on set gorge themselves on sugar and coffee to 'keep them going', which is totaly fine for them- this for me is like suicide- epic, I know but it's true :)
Just remember to keep calm and breathe. Sounds easy, but it's actually one of the hardest things for people to do on set. High stakes and high tension.
Breathe my sweets, breathe and enjoy what you're doing!!!

P.s- I also have my amazing grounding and calming stones with me on set- totally not for everyone- most people for that matter, but I love them so much!!!

report on 2nd juice cleanse day

I took it easy on myself yesterday. To be honest, I wasn't very hunrgy- I'm pretty much ALWAYS hungry! I think I'm still healing from being sick- both spew sick and cold sick, so I didn't force down any extra juices, I felt it out through the day. For breakfast I had a MEGA veg juice that featured fennel- which is an awesome cure all to upset tummies. For lunch instead of a juice I had a good bowl of miso soup with fresh herbs from the garden- parsley, corriander and nasturtiums- awesome combo! I also had a tiny side of avo on rye, like I said, I wasn't hungry but I knew I should consume some solids. I snacked on my YUMMY almond milk pulp cookies- which are now all gone- through the day, which were great pick me ups packed with protien, antioxidants and vitamin C!! For dinner I had another MEGA veggie juice, and I was happy!

I was going to share my beautiful almond milk pulp cookies, but I'm going to expand on them and save them for my ebook- so you'll have to wait a little longer, if you're luck and near by, I may even make some for you, but never fear- I will deliver the goods eventually- just gonna make them look and taste OUT OF THIS WORLD first!!!!

ALSO, I'm super excited, I'm embarking on a new venture of guest blogging!!! OMG, super excited and can't wait to start! I'll be guest blogging a few times a month for Young and Raw, who are super awesome people and have a MASSIVE following, so good times ahead for A Purple Carrot! I'll keep you updated and share links to my guest blogs when they're published! Wahoo!

Peace and love baby!

Sauerkraut!

Last year I posted about how great sauerkraut is- you can re-read here: http://apurplecarrot.blogspot.com.au/search?updated-max=2012-10-17T23:15:00-07:00&max-results=7&start=35&by-date=false
I have additions to how amazing fermenting your foods is for both, the food and your bodies- by fermenting, you increase the nutitional value by HEAPS, plus you are also getting a dose of live cultures, enzymes and probiotics! Amazing!
Sauerkraut is a living super food that helps to increase energy and mental alertness, alkalises and balances stomach Ph, Its an excelent source of B12, helps with autoimmune disorders and allergies, it's anti candida and anti fungal, high in vitamin C, anti inflammatory, it strengthens your immune system, detoxifies your body, decreases bloating and gas, increases longevity, helps assimilate nutrients in foods, supports healthy digestion, it's great for pregnant and nursing mothers, great for weight loss, clears acne......... the list keeps going!

It's time again to dive into a bottle of sauerkrautt! I've recently been reading a bunch of blogs on how to ferment your own food at home- this is something I seriously want to do, just need a bit of time first, so I went on down to my fav place ever- 'The fruit peddlers' or as my lovely friend Lucy calls it, "Mud Brothers" (a name which I completely prefer!!), and I found the beautiful range of 'Byron Bays Superkraut'!  If you're going to delve into the world of fermented foods and don't quite have the time or drive to ferment your own, check these guys out! They're organic, vinegar free, gluten free, probiotic rich, vegan, have a small range of krauts and they seem very very nice!

I  chose the 'Australian Sea Vegetables' sauerkraut which gives you "love particles", carrots, cabbage, seaweed (kelp, wakame, dulse), ginger, purple corn extract, gynostemma tea, sea salt, spring water, B.E.D lactobacilius cultre starter- ITS AWESOME!!!!

I'm loving my sourkraut at lunch time, rolled up in a green leaf from my veggie garden, with unhulled organic tahini and avocado- or the same but all rolled up into a seaweed sheet!! mmm  great side to my massive lunch time veg juice!

Also, when I went to Japan last year I became addicted to kim chi mmmmm- thats what I wanna make at home!

What other fermented foods do you like?? Any favs?

Sprouted lentil salad

After my amazing week away, I felt so good. Relaxed, my skin was looking good (I've had extreamly bad ezcema over my body), my digestion was really good. Then I came back... real life, my birthday, mums birthday- all really great, but lot's of over eating, bad digestion, which lead to skin breakouts, which lead to stress, holding my breath, not doing my daily charkra medition and cleanse, no money, bills pilling up, which worsens bad digestion, skin, stress etc.

So I've had a full week of being back, gone through a body shut down, know it's time to bring back the healing environment I set up for myself when away.
Im eating my raw foods, only eating what I need, I'm bring back my mindful slow eating- it's incredible how fast this practice left me when I came back to Melbs- but even more incredible how quickly my body broke down. Daily meditaion is back, yoga, walking, water etc. Also no booze! Since i've been working on healing my liver and kidneys over the past few months, obviously I obstained from drinking- also I honestly didn't feel like it. Over my birthday week, I had only 2 drinks- on different days, I felt awful the next day and really craved junky foods because of it- not good!

So, here's a recepie to help us all recconnect to delicious, simple, raw food. It also features my sprouted lentils!

WHAT YOU NEED
small bundle of boc choy chopped
small hadfull of grated cauilflower
1 small turnip grated
half lemon
drizzle of extra virgin olive oil
half green apple grated
as many sprouted lentils as you want

WHAT YOU DO
Pre sprout your lentils. *instructions here: http://apurplecarrot.blogspot.com.au/2013/07/health-benefits-of-sprouting.html
Then all you need to do is grate and chop, squeeze and drizzle, stir, season the EAT!

Super good for your and SO refreshing!

Soul time

If you read my 'rant' (http://apurplecarrot.blogspot.com.au/2013/06/my-rant-and-friday-re-cap.html) last week, you may well be expecting me to run away and really rest myself....

Well, whether you felt it or not- IM GOING AWAY!

I've really been taking time to noursh and care for myself, but I feel I need a real escape and recharge. I have a tiny window of no work, which I had to organise, I have very little money- but I am going to honor myself and dissapear for a week, ready to take on the world and get busy again!

You can do it too! even if it's a day, weekend, afternoon off. Make sure you nurture your busy selves!

I'm heading to the coast to shack up in a converted shipping container on top of a hill- Paradise. I will be alone, no power, technology or toilet... sound scary, I can't wait!! My lovely Brett will join me on the weekend, But for the most part, I will really be able to connect to myself and nature. YES!

As you may have guessed, I'm not gonna blog over this period, I will though take a few nice photo's and post them on A Purple Carrot's facebook page.
So stay tuned and be inspired to recharge too!

It's gonna be amazing.

Purple kale and brussel sprouts

So as I mentioned yesterday, I had a full and awesome weekend.
After filming on Saturday, I needed to make a super quick and nourishing dinner while getting ready to go out, at the same time, to a 'black tie event', and keep calm at the same time! Argh!
It was a juggle, but I made it!

I had pre soaked some lentils the day before so they just needed draining and a quick cook. At the same time I wipped on the oven to 200, washed and cut my little baby brussle sprouts in half, added some left over eggplant from the fridge, doused them in coconut oil and sea salt and popped them in the oven. Then I popped myself in the shower!!

So, inbetween drying my hair, doing my make up and getting dressed, I checked on my food... all was good. Everything took about 20mins max to cook- by that stage I was mostly ready.

Just before taking my lentils off the heat and my veggies out of the oven, I washed and shredded my purple kale. I popped it in a big bowl, drizzled a little oil, and squeezed half a lemon on top, then I massaged my kale so it was yummy and easier to eat.

To finish, I just chucked everything together, seasoned with extra salt and lemon and served with toasted rye bread. DONE- with time to spare!!!

The following day Brett and I went to Sorrento for the day, to chill out and visit some friends. I had lots of leftover dinner from the night before, so to plump it up, I went out to our little garden and picked a good mix of green to add to our meal. There was boc choy, cos, roquett, spinage and herbs. We went to the bakery for fresh baguette and set off down the coast!!!

It was soooo good!

To top and awesome weekend off, brett took me to Yong Green Food for dinner AGAIN!!! So spoilt!

Bright Beetroot and Herb Salad

It was hot in LA.

There was also lots to do.

As much as I really love cooking, all I wanted to do was to be out and about, eating light, quick and satisfying.

This salad is super quick and so good for you. It only has a few ingredients, but you could so easily add  any veg or protein.

The salad stars grated beetroot, half a lemon, salt, oil, freshly chopped coriander and parsley and purple kale. You could easily use silver beet, spinage or italian cabbage in place or the purple kale or as an addition!

Its fresh and yum!

Quick Warm Veggie Dinner For Two

It was such a pleasure staying with the lovely Jacinta Yelland! We took LA by storm!!

It was also so nice having down time with her at our little hime in Silverlake.
Research and homework by night, I would make scrummie dinners to nourish our bodies and souls.

With all the incredible fresh and raw foods I was eating, it was important for my tummy to balance it out with lightly cooked meals by night.

This was a super quick, easy and filling meal for the two of us that also doubled as left overs for the next day.

I was able to get baby yellow carrot which were great fun to use in colouring up our meals.

I roughly chopped a handful of kale, zucchini, yellow carrots, broccoli and red onion for this dish and lightly cooked in a fry pan, squeezing some lemon on top and serving with quinoa.

It took about 10 mins to cook- start the quinoa just before you start to chop the veggies to even out the cooking time and sauté the onions before adding the other veg. I used a lid to partly steam my veggies.

Bon Apetit

My Fav LA Snack

This really isn't a recipe- its actually quite a common snack- but it is absolutely delicious, quick, it's great or you and makes you happy!!!

This was (and remains) my fav quick light meal/snack when I was away. I really craved light and fresh foods- this was a daily fixture.

All you need is an avo- I'm generous- 1/4 avo to one rice cake, a handful of cherrie tomatoes- they're sweeter than regular toms, thick rice cakes, a lime and salt.

It's extremely straight forward to make- no explanation needed

Did you know that mixing toms and avo's not only taste and look good- together they're better for you!!
Research has found that the monounsaturated fat found in avo's boost the cancer fighting properties of lycopene found in tomatoes which makes it four times more effective!

Yum

Massaged Kale and Lentil Salad

So.......  I devoured the most simple and delicious (oh, and nutritious!!) meal while I was away..
I was lucky enough to have delicious fresh organic kale at my finger tips- from the farmers market in Hollywood once a week and the local farmers market (in Silverlake) twice a week. At one point in time, I had three different types of kale in my fridge at the same time! Holy toledo!!!!!

I created a this meal one day when I was busy running around, hungry and wanting quick brian food so I could work on my script... so I grabbed my kale and started massaging it with lovely olive oil. while I was giving my love to these beauties, I popped some french lentils on the stove to cook.

I then put the raw and tender kale into a bowl and when it was cooked, I poured the lovely hot lentils on top. I seasoned with a bit of lime and lots of Himalayan sea salt.

That was it!! so delicious, savoury and satisfying!

Try it for yourself! you won't be sorry!!!

My Melbourne Return & Bright Breakfast

Well my lovelies, Im back in Melbourne and have just finished my first rehearsal for the up and coming theatre show I'm in... SUBURBIA!! (More on this to follow)

It was great, so nice to be back on the floor and talking about characters and being creative.

BUT!!! it has been such a long time since I've blogged- SORRY I got so busy exploring, working, making new lovely friends in LA that I couldn't bring myself to sitting down and writing about what I was doing...

Everyday I had a massive veggie juice, had healthy salads, lots of fresh fruit, chia seed, quinoa, & cocao bars that were the best thing ever!! My favourite quick and healthy snack while away was a generous spread of avocado on thick rice cakes with himalayan salt flakes and lime squeezed on top and apples (pink lady) with almond butter on top!!! oh and of course my chia seed quinoa bars!!!

Oh  my go to snack or meal on the run was definitely a big veg juice- juice bars, health food stores and vegan and organic cafes rein in LA- you can go absolutely ANYWHERE and be sure that you'll have all of your culinary choices met and conquered.. it was my food paradise.

I even had a sneaky croissant here and there as a wonderful treaty!!

One of my lovely fresh and bright breakfasts while away was my BRIGHT BREAKFAST, which was a bright bowl full of mango, avocado, banana, sunflower seeds, flaxseeds and shaved toasted coconut with a squeeze of lime.

Yummmmm such a great way to start the day.

My Massaged Kale & Colorful Salad

FRESH INGREDIENTS YEAH!!

Jacinta and I stormed the farmers markets on my first day here! It was wonderful!

Here's a beautiful, bright, fresh and substantial salad celebrating our wares!

I've been lucky enough to get purple kale, dark green kale (Italian Cabbage), purple, pink and yellow baby potatoes and a rainbow of heirloom tomatoes!!

Its very exciting!

MY MASSAGED KALE AND COLORFUL SALAD

What you need:

a few baby potatoes
a few or one large tomato
handful of snow peas
two good handfuls of kale- try to get more than on variety
1/2 lemon

What you do:

Pop the potatoes on- prick them a couple of times with a knife and boil them in salted water until jst cooked through- then slice in to discs.

Chop the kale into strips, then with a tiny bit of oil, massage each strip (the oil makes it easier).

Slice the tomatos into discs and cut the snow peas by slicing the outer strands off, so the snow peas will be halfed length ways.

Season with salt and lemon.

Mix EAT!

Its very satisfying shopping at markets then cooking with the goodies- especially if they're different colors to what you're used to!!

YAY

Breakfast of Champions

It is soo hot here!!

Ive been craving tomatoes with salt, juices, coconut water and avaocados.... It's been great eating really freshly.

I've been wandering down the road each morning to a great jice/smoothie/health foods bar and having the BEST veggie juices ever. This morning I felt like a mix up and had an amazing bowl of avocado, banana, lime, dried cranberries and shaved toasted coconut- WOWIE

Very quick, colourful and packed full of amazingly delicious and healthy fatty acids, omegas, potassium and HEAPS MORE.

Im looking forward to continuing this deliciousness when I return to Melbourne for the summer months.

TRY IT YOURSELF!

Im also looking forward to grabbing a massively juicy mango and mixing it with avo and lime! mmmm

Fresh Herb Salad & a big day in LA

I had a busy day today....

Up at 6:30 for meditation, down to the juice bar for an AMAZING juice packed with beetroot, celery, ginger, kale, lemon and broccoli at 7:30, where I also sat out the front in the morning sun and worked on my script.
Yoga at 9:15, home for shower, snack (delicious banana)- Then Jacinta and I planned our day ahead!
A busy roaming day- so I needed a quick and healthy lunch that I could pop into a tub and head out (which did'nt end up happening- I ate it on the spot!

After lunch we headed to Hollywood Blvd for a wander and shop- It was hot and we walked a lot! It was wonderful but by about 3:30-4... I needed a pep up (it very HOT here)- SO we headed to an amazing vergan cafe on Sunset Blvd and had the most beautiful fresh juices (I had kale, grapefruit, grapes, parsley and apple in mine) and we had a hummus plate that was soooo generously full with- yes- hummus, quinoa salad, green salad and olives- it was huge, but just what we needed to conquor the world (or LA).

After our amazing recharge, we wandered home via a lovely farmers market, where yes- I wanted to but EVERYTHING IN SIGHT!!
We tried the best hemp milk in the world- which we're going back for next week because we just brought rice milk! DOH!
We also got our hands on really delicious iced tea that was made from 100% live and raw Kombucha infused with fresh pears and probiotics. Very refreshing and incredibly good for us!
We also stumbled upon a great crystal stand and got some very beautiful and powerful stones- YAY LA FARMERS MARKET!

Back home and all of a sudden it was 6! how the time flies!

We headed to the Vista- an amazing movie cinema with just one screen, where for a month or so, they just play the one movie! We saw Argo- Awesome! please do seee it eople- especially film makers, based on a true story and just over all brilliant. BUT my favourite part of the experience was the cinemas itself!
For Melbournians- it was like the forum but instead of gothic, we were in Egypt- there were massive lit heads of Egyptian ladies lining the walls, snakes adoring everything, a massive red velvet curtian covering the screen (ok- maybe that was'nt Egyptian!) and there was really full on theatrical music playing- music along the lines of something from Dracular or Frankenstine...

AMAZING DAY!

By the time we got home, I was ready for bed- but to quite my growling belly we had some of our newly purchased iced tea and avocado and lemon on a rice cracker (topped with lots of himalayan sea salt mmmmm).

So anyway, back to my Fresh Herb Salad!!

FRESH HERB SALAD

What you need:

big handful of parsley
big handful of corriander
a tomato-i used a black russian
I tried a weird tomato that I think you can only get here, I cant remember it's name but it tastes like cider and woshtershire sauce!!
handul of blached green beans
chunk of cucumber
a lemon
a cup of quinoa (i used both white and red)
chopped red onion- to your liking

What you do:

I cooked my quinoa in the morning before yoga because I had the time- plus i didnt want a hot salad.
So- cook the quinoa whenever you please.

Chop all the ingredients, season, squeeze lemon and drizzle oil and mix.
lightly blanch the beans (either pour boiling water over and let sit for a few mins- or boil some water in a pot, then pop the beans in and cook for about 2 mins then drain.) I like the beans to be still a bit crunchy.

Mix and serve! EAT!!!!!

My First dinner & Green Meal Since Stepping Off The plane

Sorry it's been a while- I have been busy exploring :)

When I got off the plane, I was craving fresh and green food!!
I ate well before during and after my flight- only I felt as though I hadn't eaten a green veggie in a while (excluding my green juice at the market).

So there was only one thing for it- a very green salad for dinner!!

GREEN SALAD

What you need:

a tomato (i used a yellow one)
1/4 small red onion thinly sliced
1/2 lime
handful of flat leaf parlesy
hanful corriander
handful baby spinage

What you do:

Slice the red onion and put into a bowl, then squeeze the lime over and let sit for a few mins.
wash, chop and slice your veg.
Put everything into a bowl season and drizzle with oil

SERVE!

Very quick easy and satisfying!

I served the meal with white quinoa and lightly blanched asparagus.

Welcome to Hollywood!

Well... I'm here!

Ive had a great first day in LA.

Before I left Melbourne, I made sure that I had plenty of amazingly delicious and nutritious snacks to keep me going during the flight.
I had a good chunk of my Lentil & Buckwheat Loaf, some Baked Falafels, raw choc, raw superfood snacks, a heap of water, banana, orange and a pumkin and oat slice.

The day before I flew out, I made sure that I gave my system a massive flooding of raw nutrients, I had 2 big carrot, beetroot, celery, lemon and ginger juices, a big green smoothie topped with coconut and raw unrefined cacao, a big bowl of veg soup and heaps of fresh fruit through the day.

It was a massive week, both emotionally, physically and mentally- I was getting tired and needed a big reboot to stop myself getting run down and sick.
I also felt that by doing this, I travelled better and had heaps of energy for 1 hour sleep and a big first day in LA.

So- look after yourself before traveling!!

I arrived in sunny LA this morning greeted by the beautiful Jacinta yellad- we dropped my stuff off at our studio apartment, then hit Hollywood up for an AMAZING fresh food farmers market.

I topped my body up with an amazing fresh juice with ginger, cayenne, lemon and cane grass- Then i had a filling green juice packed full of coconut, spinage, kale and other super ingredients!!
MMMMM This gave me the enegry I needed to get organic grocceries from the beautiful outdoor market.

We then headed to another market- found a delicious lunch at Veggie Grill- We shared a masive kale and walnut salad, quinoa and sweet potato chips!!

We stumbled upon a MASSIVE clothes, furniture and other stuff market that had really incredible and beautiful things (I only brought 2 beautiful items of clothing!- it was HARD!!)

Then, to finish our adventure off- we went to Wholefood market- my dream come true!!- It's a supermarket that only has organic, health foods, wholefoods, super foods etc.. I could'nt believe my eyes!!

So when you travel, ask questions, do some research and you can have really amazing finds and you can still thoroughly look after yourself!!

Light dinner tonight- in this heat, I might just have some of my INCREDIBLE tomatoes I got from the first market trip today!

ALL IS GOOD!

Yoga tomorrow!
